Genesis 1:6-8

“And God said: Let there be a firmament made amidst the waters: and let tit divide the waters from the waters. And God made a firmament, and divided the waters that were under the firmament, from those that were above the firmament, and it was so. And God called the firmament, Heaven; and the evening and morning were the second day.”

A firmament was placed in which man can dwell; the Hebrew here meaning a type of “hammering out,” and points to a cultural belief that the skies were a type of dome placed on the earth, with the blue waters of the sky kept above the earth, while the blue waters of the sea later find their appropriate place: “God also said: ‘Let the waters that are under the heaven, be gathered together into once place: and let the dry land appear” (Genesis 1:9). It can be seen as a type of adornment placed over the entire earth, bringing infinity to your eyes: “Thus saith the Lord, who stretcheth forth the heavens, and layeth the foundations of the earth, and formeth the spirit of man in him” (Zacharias 12:1); “The heavens shew forth the glory of God, and the firmament declareth the work of his hands” (Psalm 18:2). This is done to show the infiniteness of God’s love for you: “O the depth of the riches of the wisdom and of the knowledge of God!” (Romans 11:33). As small as you may feel before a universe that is filled with majesty and wonder, though the contents of this infinity come later, and with choirs upon choirs of angels present throughout, “For I will behold thy heavens, the works of thy fingers: the moon and the stars which thou hast founded. What is man, that thou art mindful of him?” (Psalm 8:4-5), realize that all of this has been made just for you: “For all things are yours, whether it be Paul, or Apollo, or Cephas, or the world, or life, or death, or things present, or things to come; for all are yours; and you are Christ’s; and Christ is God’s” (1 Corinthians 3:22-23). There can be a spiritual interpretation as well, for the waters in ancient cultures represented chaos, and God shows His authority over perceived chaos to express His perfect ordering: “What manner of man is this, for the winds and the sea obey him?” (Matthew 8:27). In the seeming chaos of life, there are three layers to all that is taking place: The atmosphere and world around you, the angelic, and the essence of God: “I know a man in Christ… such a one caught up to the third heaven” (1 Corinthians 12:2); you may not see God acting as a Father, taking His child to the doctor, or the actions of angels: “For he hath given his angels charge over thee; to keep thee in all thy ways” (Psalm 90:11), but by faith you can trust in both doing all things for your good: “Behold I command thee, take courage, and be strong. Fear not and be not dismayed: because the Lord thy God is with thee in all things whatsoever thou shalt go to” (Josue 1:9); “For though I should walk in the midst of the shadow of death, I will fear no evils, for thou art with me” (Psalm 22:4). Always believe in His love.
