Matthew 1:20-21

“But while he thought on these things, behold the angel of the Lord appeared to him in his sleep, saying: ‘Joseph, son of David, fear not to take unto thee Mary thy wife, for that which is conceived in her, is of the Holy Ghost. And she shall bring forth a son: and thou shalt call his name Jesus. For he shall save his people from their sins.’”

But while he thought on these things with patience, as love is patient and does not act with suddenness or rashness, an angel came to St. Joseph. Do not be intimidated, Joseph, by the mystery unfolding before your very eyes, for indeed, that which is conceived of her is of the Holy Spirit, but you are the son of David, and you have a noble part to play in the life of the Savior. So you, spouse of God, do not cower before the King of Glory in the Blessed Sacrament, do not avert your eyes from Him during the elevation, do not hide behind your shame, but let your eyes meet in holy affection, for He says to you, “”shew me thy face, let thy voice sound in my ears: for thy voice is sweet, and thy face comely” (Song 2:14). Joseph was the son of David, you are a child of God, something of far greater dignity. Mary shall bring forth a son, the angel says, and instructs the great patriarch, “You are to give Him the name that has been eternally set aside from eternity, the one that proclaims His essence: God saves,” for in the Old Testament, “Yahweh” or, “I am” showed that God is one God, He is existence, it is God the Almighty that upholds everything. However, He Who Is seemed so far, something to be climbed towards, respected, and feared, with the Law promising curses to those who disobeyed it. However, this new name unveils God in a new, marvelous way: He saves. He sees our blight, He sees our struggle, and rather than standing idly by, He reaches down into our fallen humanity with a graceful hand, which is the Incarnation, and says, “I’m here.” Sweeping aside sin and its consequences with His mighty hand, Christ clears the way for you to know his perfect love. His love is woven into His very name, being a Savior that runs to His people that they may live a risen life with Him, one that is lived in true, perfect, uninhibited love. This is the life offered to you at every moment, a life of pure love, and all you need is to grasp it and embrace love where you see it.
